Our History
The Trans-Lease Group, Inc., a third generation operation, has been consistently in business for over 125 years, having been started by the late John J. McCarthy, Jr.’s grandfather, Joseph J. McCarthy, with horse and buggies delivering coal and ice to families and businesses in the Brockton and Easton areas of MA. The Trans-Lease Group, Inc. is the parent Company of Westwood Cartage, Inc.
Upon the death of his father, at age 14, John J. McCarthy, Sr. took over day to day operations of the business, turning it into American Transport Associates, the largest privately held trucking company in the US. He later sold a large portion of this Company In the early 60’s to Ryder Transportation, helping them become the force in trucking that they are today.
Over sixty years ago, Westwood Cartage, Inc. was established to handle both long and short haul, driver leasing, dedicated transportation and government contracts. John J. McCarthy. Jr, became the third generation as he took over the Company. Today, there are two divisions of Westwood Cartage … the Cranston, RI division handling long and short haul for many Fortune 500 companies and the Springfield, MA, division handling the Post Office contracts.
In July, 2009, John J. McCarthy, Jr. passed away suddenly. His spouse, Carol Gray McCarthy, immediately took over as Chairman/CEO, a role she still maintains. The Company was able to continue with business as usual, keeping the same loyal management, staff and clientele.
Today, Westwood Cartage, Inc. continues to grow to new heights while maintaining the same principles upon which it was founded over 125 years ago.

If you are receiving a non-binding estimate, the charges that your mover assesses on your
shipment must be based on the actual weight of the shipment. Your mover may not lawfully
assess transportation charges on shipments with non-binding estimates on cubic feet, volume,
time (hourly) or on any basis other than weight. Also, the federal regulations require that
shipment weights must be determined on a state certified scale with a copy of the weigh
master’s tickets provided to you in support of the final invoice.
The busiest times for moving companies are typically during the summer months, May-September.
If you are planning a move during that time you should make arrangements early.
Friday and Saturdays are big moving days so if you have flexibility in your schedule it can
be easier to get a date during the week rather than a weekend.
