For more than 20 years, Crofter Moving and Storage has been serving the communities of Vermont, Southern New Hampshire and New England.

From his home in Brattleboro, Vermont, with a 1949 Ford pickup and a tongue-in-cheek slogan of “sit on your duff while we move your stuff,” Steve Crofter launched Crofter Moving in 1980. By 1984, Crofter Moving had two moving vans, interstate operating authority for the entire northeast, a storage barn, affiliation with a national van lines, and a different slogan. In 1988, Crofter Moving incorporated as Crofter Moving & Storage and built a modern storage warehouse and office in Guilford, Vermont, just two miles south of Brattleboro.

In 1992, Larry Hyde of nearby Putney,Vermont purchased the business and expanded its service areas to Keene, New Hampshire, and Greenfield, Massachusetts. In 1995 Crofter Moving & Storage added a 33-unit Self Storage facility. By 1999, Crofter Moving & Storage’s fleet had grown to five moving vans and one pack van.

In May of 2000, Crofter Moving & Storage was purchased by the ARCOT Company. Crofter Moving & Storage could now utilize the resources of its parent company, greatly enhancing service capacity and quality.
Crofter Moving & Storage doubled the size of its warehouse in 2003. With this increased capacity, Crofter Moving & Storage added Mobile Storage to its extensive repertoire. Crofter Moving & Storage continued to pioneer new and better ways to serve the moving and storage needs of its customers.

In 2005 Crofter Moving & Storage acquired Bolster Moving to diversify its service offerings. Bolster is well known for its expertise in the commercial / office moving sector. The combined companies secure our position in Vermont as one of the largest and most diversified moving companies in the area. Locally owned again, the new company is called Bolster Crofter Moving and Storage.

In addition to our intrastate operating authority for moves within Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, RTK Moving and Storage is also a fully licensed interstate carrier.

Q Is it a good idea to get an estimate over the phone or via the Internet?

In all likelihood, you will find that an on-site estimate based on a physical survey
of the items that you plan on moving will be more accurate than an estimate that you
provide to your mover over the telephone or the Internet. So, unless circumstances warrant
(normally due to the time constraints of a short-notice move or because you are only shipping
a few items) think carefully before you elect to waive the required physical survey
of your shipment.

Q Will my estimate be based on the weight of my shipment?

If you are receiving a non-binding estimate, the charges that your mover assesses on your
shipment must be based on the actual weight of the shipment. Your mover may not lawfully
assess transportation charges on shipments with non-binding estimates on cubic feet, volume,
time (hourly) or on any basis other than weight. Also, the federal regulations require that
shipment weights must be determined on a state certified scale with a copy of the weigh
master’s tickets provided to you in support of the final invoice.
