MFS Freight Service, LLC’s beginnings can be traced to a Hawaii born stevedore of Korean descent. Sook Moon started his company, Mercantile Trucking Service, when transpacific cargo was transported in the hulls of ships and unloaded at piers along the Honolulu waterfront by cargo net.

Building on our heritage of Mercantile Trucking Service’s superior service, MFS Freight Service, LLC continues to be a front runner in its field. We are truly “Home Grown” having started in the Hawaiian Islands in the 1950’s. MFS Freight Service is a family owned and operated company, and has been at its present location, at the entry way to Sand Island since 1966. We continue to provide the highest quality transportation service between the continental US and the Hawaiian Islands.

Over the years, we have developed long standing relationships with our customers. We have earned their trust through our service but more importantly, following through on our word. We continue to grow in this era of evolving technology to provide service solutions in the 21st century but remain close to our roots and core values. We pride ourselves in customizing service to meet the needs of our customers and consistently provide personal attention which builds long term partnerships. By owning and operating our own trucking fleet, warehousing service, and consolidation terminals, we can assure the best possible service. We also provide pickup service to all 4 major islands; Oahu, Hawaii (Kona & Hilo), Maui, and Kauai from the ports of Oakland and Long Beach.

Although we have modern technology at our disposal, it’s the people that truly set MFS Freight Service apart. Our ocean service can range from one case to one pallet. We can ship partial loads (LTL’s) to full container loads (FCL’s). Whether it is a one-time shipment or weekly shipments, MFS Freight Service, LLC can do it all.

My name is Mark Moon and my family and I own and operate MFS Freight Service LLC, and Mercantile Trucking Service, LTD. Mercantile Trucking Service was started by my father in Honolulu in 1946, and has evolved into a Honolulu warehousing and trucking business that serves Hawaii by providing storage, assembly and distribution, break bulk and delivery, and related services within our state.

As we’re made up of four main islands, we operate with our employees on the island of Oahu, and have equipment on the other major islands, those being Maui, Kauai, and the island of Hawaii, which is called the “Big Island” because it is the largest in size and because of the obvious name confusion.

As we have existed for so long, and because transportation needs have changed over the time we’ve existed, we have served companies such as General Foods, Gerber Baby Food, Kraft Foods, Folgers Coffee, and Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company just to name a few. This was during a time national brands kept inventories here in Hawaii. MTS acted as a warehouse company and drayage agent for these companies.

We created MFS Freight Service to consolidate Hawaii bound cargo in Northern and Southern California.
At these Mainland freight terminals, we receive cargo for businesses that operate in Hawaii, both National and local Hawaii companies. As many businesses don’t keep local inventories, they rely on someone who is able to provide an “on time” transportation service.

MFS Freight Service picks up cargo from the “lower 48” and funnels it through either of our California freight terminals, then ships it to and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. We operate the California freight terminals with our own employees and provide pick up service in surrounding areas. For cargo that originates further away from the terminals, we rely on arrangements we’ve made with transportation companies serving appropriate lanes.

We are the only truly Hawaiian company that provides such services. We are a minority (Hawaiian, female) owned business. My daughter Tessa is the major holder.

For more than two decades, MFS has been providing reliable less-than-container load (LCL) freight shipping for cargo that doesn’t require an entire 40’ or 45’ steamship container.

Before you spend on shipping a frill container load (FCL), let us help you determine if that’s even necessary. Often, we find our customers are shipping full containers when they are only using 70% – 80% of space.

We’ll examine the size, weight and density of your cargo and help you determine the best paúl for shipping it overseas, whether you’re shipping freight to Hawaii from the mainland.

Logistical transloading experience
One of the more complex operations in freight shipping and logistics, transloading requires a specific kind of 3PL expertise.

While on the surface, transloading seems simple (moving cargo from one vehicle or vessel to another), there are myriad complicating factors — such as tariffs, tracking during transfer, complex timing, and overall security from one mode of transport to another — that can present challenges.

Unlike intermodal shipping wherein goods remain in the same container for the duration of transport, and it’s the means of transport — ship to rail: rail to truck; etc. — that changes, transloading often requires moving goods from one container to another, or from containers to pallets, etc., as well as between ships and trains and trucks.
