The history of Durango Transfer goes back to the horse and buggy days, where “Durango Transfer and Livery” was first located on Main Avenue. The business has evolved from primarily a commodities hauler – hauling coal, produce and lumber – to a local, statewide, national, and international shipper as an agent for Atlas Van Lines. We also handle, store, deliver and set up new furniture and fixtures for various projects, as well as sensitive electronic equipment.
Ron and Jeanie Lephart purchased Durango Transfer in May, 1984 after being Professional Van Operators for United Van Lines for 6 years. Jeanie Lephart is the President and principal officer and the primary moving consultant. Ron is a Professional Van Operator for Atlas Van Lines and consultant to Durango Transfer. They both have experience in almost every aspect of the moving business, behind the scenes and as drivers. Over the years, the whole family grew up and was involved in the business, from their son, Jamey, becoming a driver and warehouse manager, to their daughter, Kelly, becoming the General Manager for several years. Even though they have moved on, it has remained “our family moving your family” because our employees are all extended family.
Durango Transfer is the only moving company in the Four Corners area that has a secure, palletized warehouse specifically constructed to store household goods. Ron and Jeanie are personally involved in many of the moves, and take every move personally to insure that each customer gets the quality and friendly service they deserve.
Jeanie and Ron Lephart are invested and involved in the community of Durango and the Four Corners area. They have lived, worked and played in Durango for over 33 years.
Making a move, whether long distance or across town, can be an exciting yet stressful time. In either case, planning can help to make the move less stressful and more enjoyable.
Durango Transfer offers local moves to residents of Durango and surrounding areas within a 60-mile radius. In almost all cases, a local move is charged based on an hourly rate, which varies depending on the number of men and the number of vehicles required. The time is calculated from the time the crew leaves the warehouse until they return, park the vehicle, and put away any special equipment that was required (if any). The more you have the movers do, the longer it will take, and the greater the cost.
A local move can range from moving one piece within the same room, to packing an entire household or office, moving the contents across the county, unpacking the cartons, and putting the contents in the cupboards and cabinets. The movers are happy to perform any moving related task that can be accomplished safely. But remember, the more you ask them to do, the more it will cost.
Making a move, whether around the world or across town, can be an exciting and yet stressful time. In either case, planning can help to make the move less stressful and more enjoyable.

ATLAS INTERSTATE GUIDE
THE ESTIMATE
Communication
When scheduling your appointment, allow the agency sales representative at least one to two hours of meeting time. The main objective of the appointment is to provide you with an approximate cost for your move. Take full advantage of this time to express any concerns you may have. The more you communicate with your representative, the more “personalized” your estimate becomes.
For example, suppose you are building a home in your new location and there is a slight possibility that it won’t be completed by the time your shipment is to deliver. Storage in Transit (S.I.T.) may be an option.
Or, perhaps it is important that costs be kept to a minimum. Your representative can assist by offering a special pricing program suitable for your budget, or may offer tips on how you can cut costs associated with your move.
Our representative will figure up the estimate, go over everything with you, and answer any questions you may have before she leaves.
THE COST
The cost of your move can be divided into three categories: the transportation charge, the cost of materials and services required to complete the move, and the cost of valuation. Let’s look at each of these individually.
Transportation Charge: This is usually your largest expense (55-70%). It is based on a tariff rate determined by the actual weight of your shipment and the number of miles it will be traveling (zip code to zip code). This charge includes the cost of loading your goods, transporting them, and unloading them at destination.
Materials and Services: Any materials and/or services required to complete your move result in additional charges. For instance, when pacing and unpacking are requested, you pay for the cost of packing material as well as labor charges for the actual packing service. Delivery conditions at your new location may also require additional services. And, unless the conditions are revealed to your sales representative in advance, costs for these services are not included in your estimate.
We really shine when it comes to international moving. Our expertise and know how are unsurpassed. Whether your destination is Europe, South America, Asia, or anywhere else, you can count on us for safe transportation and great customer service. When we come to your home to give you an estimate on an international move, we give you the bottom line cost, door-to-door including all packing and material. Our expert movers and packers have been professionally trained to prepare your things for their journey.
Items of extraordinary value such as jewelry, money, antiques, and stamp collections
can be included in your shipment, provided that you notify your local moving representative
of these items before packing and moving day. It is strongly recommended that you carry
irreplaceable and expensive articles with you, or make alternate arrangements for their
transport.
In the moving industry, items worth more than $100 per pound are considered to be articles
of "extraordinary value.” To be assured that a claim involving these articles is not limited
to minimal liability, complete and sign your mover's high-value inventory form.
Also, be sure to sign the "Extraordinary Value Article Declaration" box, if applicable, on
your Bill of Lading.
Each mover has a slightly different procedure to follow as it relates to high-value items.
Ask your relocation specialist to provide you with an explanation of their company's process.
This is a confusing (but important) task, so be sure that you clearly understand the rules
prior to load day.
All loose items must be packed in boxes to prevent loss or damage while moving. It is
recommended that you pack all items and leave the drawers empty.
