In 1958, Thurman Averitt founded Livingston Merchant’s Co-op, a small trucking company that hauled dry goods mostly between Nashville, TN and Livingston, TN. In 1969, Thurman incorporated his small company and called it Averitt Express.

While making regular deliveries in Nashville, Thurman became acquainted with a young dockworker who helped him unload his trailer. This young man’s name was Gary Sasser.

Gary happened to ask Thurman one day if he would be interested in selling his company. After some thought, Thurman said yes.

In October of 1971, Gary Sasser, at the age of 21, purchased Averitt Express, which at the time consisted of two associates, three tractors and five trailers.

Today, Averitt Express is one of the nation’s leading freight transportation and supply chain management providers.

Q Will my estimate be based on the weight of my shipment?

If you are receiving a non-binding estimate, the charges that your mover assesses on your
shipment must be based on the actual weight of the shipment. Your mover may not lawfully
assess transportation charges on shipments with non-binding estimates on cubic feet, volume,
time (hourly) or on any basis other than weight. Also, the federal regulations require that
shipment weights must be determined on a state certified scale with a copy of the weigh
master’s tickets provided to you in support of the final invoice.

Q When is the best time to move?

The busiest times for moving companies are typically during the summer months, May-September.
If you are planning a move during that time you should make arrangements early.

Friday and Saturdays are big moving days so if you have flexibility in your schedule it can
be easier to get a date during the week rather than a weekend.
