Local moves are based on an hourly rate and will depend on the size of the truck and the number of men required to complete your move safely and efficiently. Your local Alternate Moving Systems Member can provide services such as packing, crating and storage for an additional charge.
Depending on the size and complexity of your move, an Alternate Moving Systems Consultant may need to do an in-home survey of the goods to be moved. Planning for your local move is important. Book your move as far in advance as possible to ensure the very best service. If you are moving to or from an apartment or condo you will need to book the elevator in advance to ensure availability. Try to avoid the end of the month, especially in June, July and August as moving companies are usually booked to capacity.
In order to give you a quote on your local move, your Alternate Moving Systems Coordinator will need to know:
how many rooms are in your home
if you are moving to or from an apartment or condo
what articles you may have in storage
if you are planning to move your appliances or a piano
if there are any articles that because of their weight, size or location may be difficult to move

An Alternate Moving System Consultant will arrange a mutually convenient time to visit your home to do a survey of the goods to be moved at no cost or obligation to you. Our Moving Consultants use state of the art technology in order to provide you with an accurate moving quote.
The transportation charges on a long distance move (over 150 miles) are based on the weight of your shipment and the distance your shipment will be travelling from origin to destination.
Proper packing and preparation is key to the success of your long distance move. Alternate Moving Systems can offer packing materials specifically designed for moving and professional, trained packers to pack your belongings. Professional packing is the best way to safeguard against breakage. Your local Alternate Moving Systems Member can give you a quote on packing all of your belongings or just the breakable items.
Appliances should be professionally serviced by a licensed technician prior to your move. Your Alternate Moving Systems Member can arrange this on your behalf.
If you require storage on your long distance shipment or delayed delivery (up to 30 days), Alternate Moving Systems Canada has the advantage of offering container service. Your shipment will be loaded, stored, and delivered in your own container to avoid additional handling. Ask your Alternate Moving Systems Consultant for more details on this service.
Alternate Moving Systems Canada can offer you the flexibility of using traditional van service or container service on your long distance move. Alternate Moving Systems containers are the perfect solution for moves that require short-term storage (up to 30 days). Because your shipment is stored in the same container in which it was loaded, your shipment does not have to be unloaded into a warehouse and re-loaded onto another truck for delivery once your new home is ready. This means less handling and less chance of damage. Advise your Alternate Moving Systems Consultant at time of booking of container shipment, if you require storage.
Container Service can offer you:
Flexible delivery or delayed delivery (up to 30 days or more with authorization)
Less handling
Exclusive Use option available
Service to and from major centres within Canada
An Alternate Moving Systems Consultant will arrange a convenient time to come to your home to do a survey of the goods to be shipped. Our Moving Consultants use state of the art technology in order to provide you with an accurate quote on your move.
A move from Canada to the U.S. is considered a cross border move. Because your shipment will be crossing the border there are U.S. Customs requirements that must be met in order to ensure a successful move.
Your Alternate Moving Systems Consultant will provide you with the proper forms for U.S. Customs that must be filled out and given to your Driver prior to the loading of your shipment. Work Visa’s and passports must be in order and you will need to give a copy to your Alternate Moving Systems Driver.
While it is not necessary for the owner of the goods to be present at the border when the Driver crosses over to the U.S., it is very important that all documentation is filled out properly in order to avoid your shipment being held by U.S. Customs. You must enter the U.S. and declare your residency before your shipment can cross the border.
Prohibited items include protected wildlife, goods made from endangered species, explosives, ammunition and fireworks.
Charges on a cross border move are based on the weight of your shipment and the distance your shipment will be traveling. Your Alternate Moving Systems Member can arrange for additional services such as packing, crating, appliance servicing, vehicle transportation and storage.

Once you have compiled a list of movers, inform them of the destination and timing of your
move. Ask them about the types of services they offer. Also ask them to explain their
estimates in detail and to give you a copy. If any company refuses to give you a written
estimate, you should eliminate them from consideration. Then carefully compare to see which
mover best suits your needs and budget.
The cost of your move will be based on the actual weight of your belongings and the distance
they are shipped, plus the amount of packing and other services that you require.
To help you anticipate the cost of your move, movers will give you an estimate of the price.
Be sure to get written estimates from at least 3 different movers so that you can compare
their services and prices.
You have the right to receive an estimate based on a physical (in-house) survey of your
shipment. Under the regulations, your mover must base your estimate (either binding,
non-binding, or not-to-exceed), on a physical survey of the household goods to be moved if
the goods are located with a 50-mile radius of your mover’s (or his agent’s) place of business.
You may elect to waive this requirement for a physical survey, but if you elect to do so,
you must sign a written waiver of your rights.
