History
In 1953 Art and Mona Chambers moved to Vernon, BC with their three children. Art was a Sergeant in the Combat Engineers of the Canadian Army, and had been transferred to the Vernon Army Base. Once in Vernon, both Art and Mona decided that the Okanagan is where they wanted to stay and Art left the army to pursue a life in the forest industry.
In 1964, Art and his son Danny opened Dan Chambers Trucking with just two 1954 Freightliner pup-and-truck lumber units in Lumby, BC. While Danny and Art drove day and night, Mona kept books and took orders for her husband and son’s growing business.
At first, Dan Chambers Trucking hauled a little of everything – lumber, logs, and even heavy equipment.
In 1972, the company hauled its first load of wood chips to a Kamloops pulp mill using a 45-foot semi-trailer with the roof removed. Art had a feeling he was on to something; the introduction of wood residuals became a major turning point in the company’s history.
After fourteen years with the company, Danny sold his shares to Art and Mona in 1978 to pursue other interests in trailer manufacturing and design. After an official name change to DCT Chambers Trucking Ltd, Art and Mona turned to their younger son David and convinced him to leave the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the spring of 1980 and become part of the growing operation.
In 1982, Art and David bought one of the forest industry’s first portable chippers and soon DCT was running multiple chipping operations across the province. Today, DCT operates the largest independent whole log chipper mill in Western Canada.
To accommodate our clients’ changing needs and increase our fleet, in 1990 DCT acquired Langley Freight Lines, to haul general freight in the Pacific Northwest. Since then, LFL has grown into a multi-faceted company providing transportation solutions for aggregates, chemicals, dry bulk commodities, forest products, petroleum, and intermodal rail/truck transfers.
In 2006, DCT acquired another family-run forestry trucking company called Glen Transport. Based in Skookumchuck, BC, Glen Transport continues to be a leader in wood fibre hauling throughout Alberta, BC, and Montana.
In 2015, DCT purchased Western Midstream Inc, an Edmonton based oil services trucking company specializing in hauling crude oil, condensate, produced water, and methanol.
In 2016, David’s son Ryan Chambers assumed the role of President, marking the entry of the third generation of the Chambers Family into leadership of the business.
Today, The Chambers Transportation Group operates five integrated bulk transportation companies in Canada and the United States. The group is heavily vested in the Forestry, Pulp & Paper, Oil & Gas, Mining, Construction, and Chemical industries. Headquartered in Vernon, BC, the organization remains privately held by the Chambers Family and is ranked among the largest BC based trucking firms in Canada.
