Need to ship a car across the country? There are a lot of factors that can determine whether you should ship your vehicle or drive it, especially when you need to move it from one coast to another.

When you ship car across the country, it takes time, cost money, and takes a bit of trust. This is why it’s important to know how the process works and what each company’s role is in your shipment. Make sure to read the article below to know what to expect and how to make your shipment as great as it can be.

There are typically three types of auto shippers on the road: open, enclosed, and flatbed auto transporters. Open auto transport services are the most common, the cheapest, and the easiest to find for most auto shippers. They are best for people shipping vehicles they intend to drive on a regular basis.

While other options exist and are available for those who need it, open auto transport is the standard method of transporting a vehicle and it is the method we consider standard. That is, when you get a quote from us, you need to specify whether you want another type of carrier, or the quote will be for open transportation services.

Enclosed car shipping is a great way to protect your vehicle from damage during transport. Most vehicles that are damaged during the auto transport process are damaged during pickup and delivery of other vehicles. As most vehicles are shipped on open ten-car haulers, that’s 20 opportunities for your vehicle to be damaged!

Enclosed auto transport, though, brings that risk down to almost nothing. How? Enclosed transport trucks use hydraulic race ramps or lift gates and don’t stack vehicles on two racks. This means fewer vehicles shipped by the truck and no opportunities to damage other vehicles at loading and unloading.

Q What is an NMFC number?

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) allocates a specific number to each product
that could be shipped. That is the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) that pairs to the
freight class best suited for the product. It’s important to include the NMFC number on the bill of
lading to reduce chances of reclassification.

Q How should I package my items?

When shipping goods, it’s always important to minimize movement. Pack crates or boxes as full
as possible, with heavier items on the bottom. If the crate is not filled, use packing material
to plug the empty spaces.
