Norsemen was founded in 1979 by David E. Steffens, with two trucks. Originally based out of Waseca, Minnesota, Norsemen expanded its operations to Lake Mills, Iowa, in 1987. Lake Mills is now the corporate headquarters. In 2002, David sold the company to two of his sons, David A. Steffens and Jay Steffens. David and Jay expanded Norsemen Trucking into a complete logistics company.

Today, Norsemen has a fleet of 55 late model trucks that are driven by company drivers hauling dry van freight, a fleet of 40 owner-operators who pull flatbeds or drop decks, and a variety of agents specializing in all traffic lanes, all dedicated to meet and exceed customer and company needs.

In 2022, Norsemen became part of the True North family of companies.

Norsemen excels in developing personal relationships with customers and company personnel. Doing so allows Norsemen to customize the customers’ and employees’ needs.

STEFFENS FAMILY

The True North Companies Operating Philosophy

Our leadership believes in servant leadership. We strive to keep a small family business feeling as we build our businesses, and we foster long-term cultural stability by equipping and empowering our team members. Often, we come alongside business owners who wish to see their legacies preserved.

Norsemen Specialized is our Owner Operator Division. We specialize in Flatbed & Drop Deck Freight. With over 60 Contracted Owner Operators we are big enough to get you loaded & paid, but small enough to remember your name. And with our multiple terminals you will always have a friendly face to stop in and chat with!

Q How do I determine freight class?

There are 18 freight classes. They are determined by weight, dimensions, density, storage capability,
ease of handling, value and liability from instances like theft, damage, breakability and spoilage.
To help you determine freight class, we’ve developed a freight density calculator.

Q What’s the difference between less than truckload and full truckload?

Less than truckload (LTL) shipping allows multiple shippers to share space on the same
truck while full truckload shipments typically travel on only one truck with one destination.
