NWD Inc

In 1978, my husband, Richard DeCosta began a trucking company, E & R Trucking. The business started with one truck leased to NEMF (New England Motor Freight) with deliveries centered in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. In 1980, a new company was formed NWD (National Wholesale Distributors). The company was incorporated in 1982 with only the letters NWD,Inc.

It is essential, in this business, to be punctual, but absolutely imperative, when transporting seafood to have on time deliveries to meet market deadlines. Failure to do so can be costly to both the customer and the transportation company. It was Richard that believed it would be beneficial to engage Ryder Transportation Services into our operation. Utilizing Ryder was an insurance policy in which to guarantee timely deadline deliveries. Ryder guarantees replacement of equipment after three hours down time.

We worked with the Warwick, Rhode Island facility. At this time there was no Ryder terminal in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Due to our success with Ryder, businesses in the area began examining more closely the advantages of rental equipment. As a result of the interest and demand generated, Ryder opened their first New Bedford facility in 1981 to facilitate the interest in this area. It not only worked – it is still working 25 years later.

Family owned and operated since 1979. Servicing the Eastern seaboard and Midwest, NWD Trucking has been transporting seafood from Boston, Massachusetts to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania several times a week. In 1999 we added new lanes of traffic, delivering seafood to Cleveland,Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky areas.

In 2003, NWD started additional weekly transportation of seafood from New Bedford, Massachusetts to Brooklyn, New York. Our deliveries are nightly, Sunday through Thursday to Fulton Market, ACA, Benny’s and Brooklyn Fish Transfer locations.

Richard DeCosta planned and founded this company with a drive to be, not only successful, but reputable. A philosophy that my family maintains. I have no doubt where this company is headed. We are a tightly knit organiziaton with quality people working for and with us. Our fleet has grown to 15 tractors and 18 reefer trailers.

In addition to our company fleet of vehicles, we are affiliated with Ryder Truck Rental and Penske Truck Lease since 1980. This affiliation has enabled us to have equipment available as needed, making us adaptable to the requests of our customers in any area.

As a family based business with hands on involvment at various levels in the company, we take great pride and are totally committed to giving that extra effort to realize our customers needs.
