Span Alaska began in 1978 as a vision from one of the most respected people in the industry.

Ray Landry’s legend lives on.

Ray Landry was one of the most respected people in the Alaska freight industry even before he formed Span Alaska Consolidators in 1978. With 30 years of experience with the major players in the industry, Ray applied all his knowledge and insight to launching and developing the kind of company he knew would best serve Alaskans. With the support of his employees and his customers, he succeeded.

From humble beginnings, Ray steadily built his one-man operation into one of the largest freight companies serving Alaska. He worked hard. He served his clients with integrity and respect. And he surrounded himself with others who did the same.

By the time Ray retired in 1990, he’d built a strong management group that shared his sense of integrity, work ethic, and knowledge of the Alaska freight industry. More than 30 years later, the majority of Ray’s management group is still intact and active in the day-to-day operation of the business.

Today, Span Alaska and its subsidiaries ship over 400 million pounds of freight annually to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, employ more than 200 people, and own more than 400 pieces of rolling equipment. In addition to its vast volume of shipments from the Lower 48 to Southcentral Alaska, the company also offers overnight service from Anchorage to Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula, and provides LTL (less than truckload) service via barge from Seattle to Southeast Alaska.

When Ray retired, the next generation of Landry’s ran the business until 2014. In 2014 Mike, Teresa, Tom, and Paul retained a significant investment in Span Alaska, with the majority share being held by Evergreen Pacific Partners of Seattle, WA.

September 2015 saw the purchase and integration of Pacific Alaska Freightways (PAF) into SPAN.

In August, 2016 SPAN was acquired by Matson Logistics. As a subsidiary of Matson Logistics Span Alaska is now officially part of the Matson family. With Matson’s long legacy of innovation, quality service, and dedication to their markets, we are pleased to now be part of this great enterprise. As a leading logistics and supply chain provider in the U.S., Matson Logistics is widely recognized for consistent, high quality service and this fits perfectly with Span Alaska’s drive to provide the best possible service and value for our customers. Our name, management team, staff and operations remain unchanged. –

Span Alaska Transportation is based in Auburn, WA operating out of a of a 93 door terminal on 15 acres. Terminals in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai, Kodiak and Wasilla are all operated by Span Alaska.

The culture continues with a customer-first mindset driving Span Alaska to be the best solution for the challenging Alaska marketplace. And Span Alaska continues to invest in the future. We are constantly adding new equipment, upgrading our computer technologies, and most importantly, we hire employees who embody the company’s formula for success and customer satisfaction: experience, integrity, and loyalty.

ALASKA FREIGHT FORWARDING EXPERTISE
We know Alaska logistics, Alaska freight forwarding and Alaska – we have what it takes to transport your freight and shipments to, from, and around the state of Alaska.

ALASKA FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION CONNECTIONS
Span Alaska moves more LTL (less than truckload) freight than any other carrier between the lower 48 and Alaska–for several good reasons. We have the equipment, the people, and the experience with Lower 48 carriers and ocean carriers necessary to transport freight quickly and efficiently. Our long term connections enable us to consistently provide the highest value of service and the ability get things done that others simply cannot.

Q What should I do with my jewelry and other valuable items?

Items of extraordinary value such as jewelry, money, antiques, and stamp collections
can be included in your shipment, provided that you notify your local moving representative
of these items before packing and moving day. It is strongly recommended that you carry
irreplaceable and expensive articles with you, or make alternate arrangements for their
transport.

In the moving industry, items worth more than $100 per pound are considered to be articles
of "extraordinary value.” To be assured that a claim involving these articles is not limited
to minimal liability, complete and sign your mover's high-value inventory form.
Also, be sure to sign the "Extraordinary Value Article Declaration" box, if applicable, on
your Bill of Lading.

Each mover has a slightly different procedure to follow as it relates to high-value items.
Ask your relocation specialist to provide you with an explanation of their company's process.
This is a confusing (but important) task, so be sure that you clearly understand the rules
prior to load day.

Q How do I prepare my appliances for moving?

Appliances such as washers, dryers, and refrigerators must be disconnected, and the washer
must have a stabilizer installed. Again, your estimator can help you understand how these
items are properly serviced. All local moving companies have business relationships with
local service providers that handle this type of service, however full service moving
companies and national moving companies will also be able to provide all of the moving
services you require. Be sure you know who your mover will be using, as you will need to let
these people into your home to provide the service.
