The Founding Years: Oak Harbor Transfer, the forerunner to Oak Harbor Freight Lines, was founded in 1916 by Ben Koetje of Oak Harbor, WA. Oak Harbor Transfer was a local cartage carrier servicing Whidbey Island. In 1936 John and Gus Vander Pol purchased the small island carrier for $600.00 cash and assumed its debt. Their younger brother Henry joined them in 1937. In 1942 the brothers purchased another small carrier called Oak Harbor Freight Lines, they merged the two operations together and kept the latter name.

Family Business: The brothers over time developed the carrier into a small LTL operation serving a number of counties in Western Washington. In 1974 Henry purchased the company in full. In this same year his two sons Edward and David began working with their father.

Growing Years: With deregulation in 1980 Oak Harbor began its expansion which continues today. Throughout this period Oak Harbor Freight Lines developed into a highly respected regional LTL carrier serving points throughout the States of California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Currently with 35 terminals, 1300+ employees and annual revenues over $160 million Oak Harbor has established itself as a leading premium service carrier in the west, providing consistent high quality services at competitive (not the lowest) prices. Currently owned and operated by Edward and David Vander Pol, the company’s Co-Presidents, Oak Harbor Freight Lines serves more points direct in the Northwest than any other single carrier.

The Future: With uniformed professional drivers, and a corporate wide focus to serve the customer, Oak Harbor is positioned to continue down the path of success. The continued Investing in technology, people, facilities and quality processes assures Oak Harbor’s infrastructure will continue to meet their customers’ needs. Via strategic partners Oak Harbor offers services throughout the United States and Canada allowing many of their customers to single source their transportation needs with Oak Harbor.

Q What should I do with my jewelry and other valuable items?

Items of extraordinary value such as jewelry, money, antiques, and stamp collections
can be included in your shipment, provided that you notify your local moving representative
of these items before packing and moving day. It is strongly recommended that you carry
irreplaceable and expensive articles with you, or make alternate arrangements for their
transport.

In the moving industry, items worth more than $100 per pound are considered to be articles
of "extraordinary value.” To be assured that a claim involving these articles is not limited
to minimal liability, complete and sign your mover's high-value inventory form.
Also, be sure to sign the "Extraordinary Value Article Declaration" box, if applicable, on
your Bill of Lading.

Each mover has a slightly different procedure to follow as it relates to high-value items.
Ask your relocation specialist to provide you with an explanation of their company's process.
This is a confusing (but important) task, so be sure that you clearly understand the rules
prior to load day.

Q How do I prepare my appliances for moving?

Appliances such as washers, dryers, and refrigerators must be disconnected, and the washer
must have a stabilizer installed. Again, your estimator can help you understand how these
items are properly serviced. All local moving companies have business relationships with
local service providers that handle this type of service, however full service moving
companies and national moving companies will also be able to provide all of the moving
services you require. Be sure you know who your mover will be using, as you will need to let
these people into your home to provide the service.
